(NYT29) PERRIS, Calif. -- Dec. 9, 2007 -- CHUTELESS-JUMPING-2 -- Jeb Corliss practicing skydiving in a wingsuit he developed in Perris, Calif., in November 2007. Corliss wants to jump from a helicopter a half-mile above the earth and land without using a parachute. Corliss will wear nothing more than a wing suit, an invention that, aeronautically speaking, is more flying squirrel than bird or plane. And he is not alone: Around the globe, at least a half-dozen groups -- in France, South Africa, New Zealand, Russia and the United States -- are chasing this same flight of fancy. Although nobody is waving a flag, it is a quest that has evoked the spirit of nations' pursuits of Everest and the North and South poles. (Axel Koester/The New York Times)
