(NYT28) GUANGZHOU, China -- Dec. 7, 2007 -- CHINA-TRUCKS-POLLUTE-3 -- Truckers wait in line at a gas station in Guangzhou City, China, Dec. 7, 2007. Trucks are the mules of China's spectacularly expanding economy -- ubiquitous and essential, yet highly noxious. They burn diesel fuel contaminated with more than 100 times the pollution-causing sulfur that the United States allows in most diesel fuel. While car sales in China are growing even faster than truck sales, the trucks are by far the largest source of street-level pollution. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
