(NYT) WASHINGTON -- Nov. 30, 2007 -- GAYS-MILITARY-1 -- A shadow from a passing jogger and a tree appear near hundreds of American flags, each said to represent a member of the U.S. military who was discharged because of their sexual orientation, after they were installed on the National Mall by gay rights activists Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 in Washington. Marking the 14th anniversary of legislation that allowed gay men and lesbians to serve in the military but only if they kept their orientation secret, 28 retired generals and admirals released a letter on Friday urging Congress to repeal the law.
