(NYT) MIDDLETOWN, N.J. -- Jan. 27, 2007 -- SUBURBAN-IMAM-3 -- Sheik Reda Shata, right, prayed at a mosque member's home, in Middletown, N.J., where he was invited to dinner on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007. Shata has found Muslims in Middletown to be better assimilated than the new immigrants at his former mosque in Bay Ridge but has worked hard to raise attendance at prayers in the suburbs. Seven months have passed since Shata moved to Middletown to lead a mosque of prosperous, settled immigrants. It is a world away from Bay Ridge, in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he toiled for almost four years, serving hundreds of struggling Muslims for whom America was still new.
