(NYT17) NEW YORK -- Jan. 14, 2007 -- NY-STOREFRONT-PASTOR-3 -- Ramona Campana at the Ark of Salvation church in Harlem in December 2006. Campana was attracted to the unity and passion she saw in a Pentecostal group at a relative's wake in 1993. A Roman Catholic, she converted soon after, and joined Ark of Salvation years later. Now, on most nights when the neighborhood winds down to rest, the fluorescent lights inside the room flicker to life, and the spartan, whitewashed space rattles under a sonic barrage of prayers, yelps and tambourines.
