(NYT31) NEW YORK -- December 18, 2006 -- SCI-BRAIN-LASER-5 -- Dr. David Langer, right, a neurosurgeon at St. Luke's Roosevelt hospital in New York City, uses a microscope to locate an artery in a patient's brain on Dec. 12, 2006. In assistance with Dutch Dr. Cornelis Tulleken, Langer performs a bypass procedure on Chris Ratuszny, 26. The procedure, which was done to bypass a brain aneurysm, was used with the ELANA technique, developed by Dr. Tulleken in 1993. The technique, which stands for excimer laser-assisted nonocclusive anastomosis, uses a laser catheter for the bypass. (Todd Heisler/The New York Times)
