(NYT27) NEW YORK -- December 18, 2006 -- SCI-BRAIN-LASER-1 -- A small ring is sewn into the end of a vein taken from Chris Ratuszny's leg to bypass an aneurysm in his brain in New York City on Dec. 12, 2006. The procedure, which was done to bypass a brain aneurysm, was used with the ELANA technique, developed in 1993. The technique, which stands for excimer laser-assisted nonocclusive anastomosis, uses a laser catheter for the bypass. (Todd Heisler/The New York Times)
