(NYT17) UNDATED -- June 23, 2004 -- ELY-GARDEN-3-B&W -- Helena Rutherfurd Ely, circa 1911. One hundred years ago, Rutherford Ely, a founder of the Garden Club of America, wrote a series of books that popularized ??cottage gardening,'' the style of planting we know today. As the books caught on, her New Jersey home, Meadowburn, became a horticultural Mecca. The books are long out print, but her garden lives on, quietly maintained in tribute to her.
