(NYT29) UNDATED -- Aug. 28, 2002 -- ADV. FOR SUN., SEPT. 1 -- MUSIC-GOULD-GOLDBERG-B&W -- The pianist Glenn Gould's career was bracketed by landmark recordings of Bach's "Goldberg'' Variations, one in 1955 and the other in 1981, the year before he died of a stroke. Though the later performance was also widely hailed, the recording lacked depth, and Gould's piano sounded metallic. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Gould's birth on Sept. 25, Sony will release remastered recordings of both "Goldbergs'' and a bonus disc with an interview of Gould. There is also an audio documentary of the 1955 sessions, which captures banter between Gould and the engineers, and a few fascinating outtakes. An undated photo of Gould, circa 1955.
