(NYT36) PARIS -- Aug. 28, 2002 -- ADV. FOR SUN., SEPT. 1 -- FILM-ZANUCK-ANNIVERSARY-2 -- Darryl F. Zanuck, who would have been 100 on Thursday, was an archetypal figure at the center of the Hollywood studio system, a man who defined American movies of his time, the 1930s through the 1960s. As an omnipotent and amazingly prolific producer, he was responsible for a great diversity of films -- his career stretched from silent movies and "42nd Street'' to "The Longest Day,'' and included "The Public Enemy,'' and "The Grapes of Wrath.'' In his 20s, as studio chief at Warner Brothers and later as vice president in charge of production at 20th Century Fox, a company he helped to create, Zanuck will probably be remembered for his socially conscious movies about anti-Semitism, racism and mental illness.
