(9/11/2001)Men, covered in ash from the first building collapse of the World Trade Center, catch their breath Sept. 11, 2001, in the Stage Door Deli on Vesey Street in lower Manhattan where they took refuge before the second building came down. Police officers, firefighters and a small group of civilians took shelter in the deli before they could escape the area. The survivor, left, said he had walked down 81 stories from one of the World Trade Center buildings when they were evacuated after a plane hit it. (Ruth Fremson/The New York Times)
