(NYT29) NEW YORK -- February 9, 2007 -- TURKISH-NOVELIST-SECURITY -- The Turkish writer Elif Shafak at the Warwick Hotel, in Manhattan on Feb. 7, 2007. Shafak's sixth novel, ?The Bastard of Istanbul,O was a runaway best-seller in her home country, selling more than 120,000 copies. Shafak had planned a six-city book tour here to promote her book, but sharply curtailed it after the murder in January of Hrant Dink, a prominent Turkish newspaper editor of Armenian ancestry, and her close friend.
