(NYT31) WHITELAW, Wis. -- Oct. 15, 2005 -- KATRINA-MATCHMAKERS-2 -- Some of the goods donated to help families displaced by Hurricane Katrina in the basement of Nikki Alexander's home in Whitelaw, Wis., in October 2005. Alexander has helped find housing for more than 100 people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. While the Federal Emergency Management Agency embarks on the largest relocation of people in its history, and the Red Cross distributes record sums in emergency relief, countless ad-hoc helpers are filling a void by working on a family-to-family scale. Since the earliest hours after the disaster, people have posted invitations on the Internet for evacuees to stay in their homes, work in their stores, rent their apartments, but institutional agencies often ignored such offers for liability reasons. Evacuees stuck in shelters, meanwhile, rarely had the telephone or computer time to comb through the offers themselves. (Kenneth Dickerman/The New York Times)
