(NYT9) NEW YORK -- Oct. 1, 2005 -- TEACH-FOR-AMERICA-2 -- Mike Kalin may not get much sleep, but he is enjoying teaching at the Bronx Writing Academy on Friday, Sept. 30, 2005. For a surprisingly large number of bright young people, Teach for America -- which sends recent college graduates into poor rural and urban schools for two years for the same pay and benefits as other beginning teachers -- has become the next step after graduation. It is the post-college do-good program with buzz, drawing those who want to contribute to improving society while keeping their options open and delaying long-term career decisions.
