(NYT40) NEW YORK -- March 4, 2005 -- NY-GATES-COST -- Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude walk through "The Gates" exhibiton the day after the closing of the exhibit in Central Park on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005. They are followed by a security detail. One million square feet of nylon fabric -- saffron. Five thousand tons of steel. Sixty miles of vinyl tubing. Lots of nuts and bolts. And a $21 million price tag? The artists and their supporters insist, testily at times, that it is nobody's business how Christo and Jeanne-Claude spend their own money.
