(NYT34) RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. -- April 23, 2005 -- NY-STADIUM-FLOATER -- The opening of Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island was celebrated on Saturday, April 23, 2005, with ceremonies and competition. Justin Gatlin, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, started the races in a tribute to Jesse Owens, who qualified for the Olympics in trials on the island in 1936 and went on to win gold medals. Spectators cheered the events, and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was among the dignitaries on hand as the national anthem was performed. The stadium is capable of holding Olympic trials.
