(NYT20) BASRA, Iraq -- June 27, 2004 -- IRAQ-BASRA-2 -- An Iraqi woman buys drinking water from a vendor at beside a street filled with garbage in Basra, Iraq on June 21, 2004. Residents of Basra are advised to buy water on the street from vendors due to the poor quality of the tap water. American engineers figured that the the Sweet Water Canal in Basra, Iraq, was a sound source of water for Basra, an Iraqi city of 2 million people. Instead, they found a nightmare of substandard construction, malfunctioning equipment and haphazardly repaired leaks. (Shawn Baldwin/The New York Times)
