(NYT30) NEW YORK -- May 25, 2004 -- NY-BURGLARY-DNA -- Criminalist Linda Razzano, of the New York forensics lab at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, scrapes a shirt's collar area in order to collect epithelial cells in order to extract DNA evidence. New York's Chief Medical Examiner's Office plans to open a new lab to test hundreds of DNA samples a day from nearly every crime scene, including burglaries and stolen cars, to find DNA samples previously considered too miniscule to collect. The office then plans to match the DNA against a database of convicted offenders and DNA profiles from other crime scenes. (Mike Appleton/The New York Times)
