(NYT21) MARBLEHEAD, Mass. -- June 29, 2004 -- Adv. for Sun., July 4 -- TRAVEL-MARBLEHEAD-2 -- Visitors at the harbor from Fort Sewall in Marblehead, Mass., in June. The great boom for Marblehead, which is just under 20 miles north of Boston, came before the Revolutionary War, when the British Parliament declared it "the greatest towne for fishing in New England." The wealth generated by the Marblehead fleet, and subsequently the great trading ships that came in their wake, was translated on dry land, atop unforgiving bedrock, into the fine houses that still dominate Old Town, clustered along Marblehead Harbor.
