(NYT44) HORSE CANYON, Utah -- June 30, 2004 -- UTAH-ARCHAEO -- A Fremont Indian granary -- a small structure used to safeguard a summer's crop -- stands inaccessible on a bluff on the Wilcox ranch in Horse Canyon, Utah, June 30, 2004, a property recently bought for $2.5 million by the state of Utah from former owner and rancher Waldo Wilcox. The ranch is a treasure trove of Fremont Indian artifacts. Archaeologists pulled aside the curtain on Wednesday to reveal what can only be called a secret garden: The pristinely preserved ruins -- called Range Creek -- of an ancient civilization that was long ago lost to the mists of time in the remote cliffs of eastern Utah, but then resolutely protected over the last 50 years by Wilcox, the local rancher who kept mum about what he knew.
