(NYT50) MARION, Ind. -- May 11, 2004 -- WORKER-RETRAIN-EDUC -- Former Thomson employees taking a computer training course at Ivy Tech State College in Marion, Ind., on Monday, May 3, 2004. With just weeks until the RCA plant shuts down, that used to employ almost 4,000 people, this town of 31,000 is bracing for the economic shock. And as in thousands of other American communities shaken by factory closings, among those hurt will be students like LaShanna Evans, with college plans thrown into disarray, and the public schools, where enrollments are declining and budgets are under pressure as tax rolls shrink.
