(NYT14) BILMA, Niger -- Feb. 12, 2001 -- AFRICA-SALT-2 -- In the mines of Bilma, Niger, a few dozen families are the inheritors and sustainers of the salt caravan trade that brought life to the Sahara for centuries. Fatima Boucar, 36 and her husband, Ramadan Lawan, 42, have toiled in the salt pits together for 24 years. The couple pour salt into a mold which can be carried by camel caravan hundreds of miles through the desert to southern Niger and northern Nigeria.
