(NYT2) NEW YORK -- Feb. 7, 2001 -- NY-HOMELESS-INCREASE-2 -- For the first time since the late 1980's, the number of people lodging in the shelter system has passed 25,000. The most striking finding is that the number of women and children now average 78 percent of the nightly total, and the number of single women has also risen markedly.
