(NYT11) NEW YORK -- Feb. 5, 2001 -- VIOLIN-PARTNERSHIP -- Five years ago the violinist Robert McDuffie found the instrument of his dreams: a 1735 Guarneri del Gesu violin known as the Ladenburg, whose list of players includes the 19th-century virtuosos Nicolo Paganini and Ludwig Spohr. It came with a sheaf of papers attesting to its pedigree; it was in mint condition. And the price was $3.5 million. On Monday a group of 16 investors calling itself 1735 Del Gesu Partners, L.P., officially purchased the Ladenburg from its owner for the express purpose of leasing it to McDuffie.
