Sierra Leone, Koidu. August 2008. Abubakar is a miner, he is 37 years old, from a village in the north, close to border with Guinee. He is a former teacher of English and Social Science but lost his job after coming back from the refugee camp in Guinee after the civil war - his school and his house had been destroyed - so he seeks hs survival in digging in the mines around Koidu. "I can read, I can write, I am intelligent - if there was another job, I wouldn?t waste my life in the pits." Hew hadn?t seen a diamond since almost two years, his wife left to the village in the north and took their two children with her; Abubakar couldn?t feed them. He has not seen them since three years.
