Sierra Leone, Koidu. August 2008. Diamond diggers discussing about money issues with their boss. Normally these workers work for two bowls of rice. In Kono District, diamond mining town of Koidu, artisanal mining takes place in the mud/gravel pits that surround the town to the north, south and west. Koidus "diamond-diggers" are mostly freelance workers who are paid a subsistence wage. At least 13 million people worldwide from over 30 developing countries engage in artisanal and small-scale mining.
