In Kono District, diamond mining town of Koidu, artisanal mining takes place in the mud/gravel pits that surround the town to the north, south and west. Koidus "diamond-diggers" are mostly freelance workers who are paid a subsistence wage. At least 13 million people worldwide from over 30 developing countries engage in artisanal and small-scale mining.
