CHEERFUL CHEATAH.... A cheetah appears to be having a cheeky laugh as it lays down amongst sun-scorched grass. The cheetah was breaking into a yawn at the Zimanga Private Game Reserve in South Africa. Chemical engineer John Mullineux, 40, from Secunda, South Africa said, "I was on a photographic safari. Cheetahs are my favourite cat. We were able to walk up to her coming to within around 20 metres from her laying on the ground. This is where we waited for the sunset light. We spent about an hour with her and she barely moved the whole time, but I kept waiting in position, laying on the ground for the low angle, for when she did move and I was lucky to get her yawning twice." "Although the cheetah is yawning the photos look like it could be laughing. Oddly, leopards and lions look angry after a yawn while a cheetah looks like they are laughing. I love the series as a number of things had to come together in one moment." "It is not typical that one is allowed to approach dangerous animals on safari, this was a private reserve with specially trained rangers and guides. But if anyone does go on safari, taking a planned walking safari is an unforgettable experience." I was on a photographic safari Zimanga Private Game Reserve in South Africa (back when they were still a new reserve) Cheetahs are my favourite cat and while difficult to photograph interestingly (they rest flat on the ground an enormous amount), I love them as incredible animals. To get this set of images, I got the opportunity to walk towards this cheetah. We walked around 100m to where we knew she was lying. Seated about 20m from her, on the ground, we waited for sunset light. to get the low angle, I lay prone on the ground with my long lens resting on my bent elbow. We spent about an hour with her and she barely moved the whole time, but I kept waiting in position for when she did move, and I was lucky to get her to yawn, twice. Yes, indeed. (there are also lion and leopard yawning images in the images I sent through) I love the series as a number of things had to come together in one moment. It started with my having just decided to take my photography more seriously and was actively pursuing that new journey. Then it was my favourite mammal. Then the light was right. There was an interesting foreground and distant background which help make the image technically more pleasing. The yawn was the moment I was hoping for. But all these things pailed in comparison to spending time with a wild cheetah on foot, exposed to her nature (there are very specific behaviours we needed to have so as not to disturb or anger her) and that feeling has remained with me. As a result, this series gave the first of my images that I printed for my home.
