TEM of sperm from infertile man. Male infertility primarily results from a failure to produce normal spermatozoa. Although the causes are varied, abnormal spermatozoa can generally be distinguished from normal sperm. Many of the aberrant features seen in abnormal sperm are illustrated in this micrograph. These features can not be seen in the sperm form an fertile individual. Abnormal structures of spermatozoa seen here include irregularly shaped, and improperly condensed nuclei, multinuclear, round tails which lack axonemes, and spermatozoa with ruptured membranes. In addition, the ejaculate from infertile individuals is characterized by the presence of cellular debris containing organelles from degenerate sperm.
