Fluid-mosaic model of the cell membrane, which envisions a two-dimensional solution of oriented lipids and globular proteins. The lipid bilayer is assumed to be fluid and the integral proteins are free to diffuse laterally within the plane of the membrane, if not restrained by interaction with peripheral proteins in the underlying cytoplasm.
