The horses pass through a rhino boundary as they return to Borana Conservancy, Kenya, on September 3, 2023. The boundary allows migratory species the freedom to move in and out of the Conservancy, while keeping rhino in, through a series of short fence-posts. The rhino’s large toes and girth prevent them from being able to pass through the spaces between the posts, while all other animals can easily fit through. There are also large piles of stones placed a meter after the posts, which makes the gap appear barricaded to a short-sighted rhino. The gaps have automatic, infra-red trap cameras that take still images of anything that crosses, and are monitored by Borana rangers. Horseback safaris allow you to journey slowly and more fully immerse yourself in the ecosystem you’re exploring. The concept of the horseback safari originated in Kenya back in the 1970s and has since expanded to a number of conservancies across the African continent. Since wildlife perceives horses as just another animal you can fly under the radar and experience one-of-a-kind close-up encounters from a horse-eye view.
