The radio telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory is set in the heart of the Cheshire Plains, 20 miles south of Manchester. In 1945 Dr Bernard LOVELL came to Manchester University to observe cosmic rays, following his work on World War 2 radars. Since then, the current 76 metre (250 foot) telescope has been improved and refurbished several times. The latest refit commenced in 2000 and has seen the surface of the parabollic reflector being replaced by screwed on galvanised metal. Then coated in two part epoxy resin and painted matte white. In 1957 the telescope was the West's only means of tracking the Russian's SPUTNIK. Later in 1979 it helped to confirm Albert EINSTEIN's theory of Gravitational lenses. The telescope was renamed the LOVELL Telescope and more recently it was used to track BEAGLE 2 mission to Mars. Date: 08.04.2004. Ref: B49_084147_0427. COMPULSORY CREDIT: Bandphoto /Hotshoe/Photoshot
