Nick Hannes/Reporters/REPORTER Armenie, Gyumri, 29-01-2007 Three men are stealing metal parts out of a building which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1988, near the Charles Aznavour square. In december 1988 an earthquake destroyed almost the whole of northern Armenia. Thousands of people lost their houses. The Soviet-Union promised new homes, and provided temporary living containers and "domiks", "little houses". But after the collapse of the Soviet-Union, the help program was suddenly stopped. Today, hundreds of families in Gyumri, Spitak and Vanadzor still live in misery and unhygienic circumstances in their containerhouses. They lack water, decent toilets and energy, and often live with the whole family in two or three "rooms". Support to these poor people doesn't seem to be a priority for the government.
