Israel Sun/REPORTER Former Knesset Member Omri Sharon, the son of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, appeared before the Tel Aviv District Court Thursday for a first hearing into his sentence appeal. Sharon was sentenced by the Tel Aviv Magistrates Court nearly a year ago to nine months in prison, and a fine of NIS 300,000 (USD 64,000). He was convicted of a series of offenses related to the fundraising law during the Likud 1999 primaries. In his appeal Sharon claimed that the court's approach was too harsh, and that the sentence constituted extreme and unjustified discrimination. His attorneys also slammed the court for allegedly disregarding the fact Sharon took responsibility for his actions, admitted to the offenses, and paid a heavy price for them. Sharon's attorneys asked that the court significantly reduce his sentence and annul the prison term.
