Podlondyńskie Croydon - Eyevine
14/01/17. Spotlight Croydon. Croydon is a large town in south London, England. The principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon, it is one of the largest commercial districts outside Central London, with an extensive shopping district and night-time economy. By the early 20th century, Croydon was an important industrial area, known for car manufacture, metal working and Croydon Airport. In the mid 20th century these sectors were replaced by retailing and the service economy, brought about by massive redevelopment which saw the rise of office blocks and the Whitgift Centre, the largest shopping centre in London until 2008. Croydon was amalgamated into Greater London in 1965. Esther Sutton, Landlady at the Oval Tavern, Oval Road. The Oval Tavern has been a fixture of Croydon since 1860 & has been in the capable hands of Esther for 3 1/2 years. It's known locally as the best live music venue in the area leaning heavily towards jazz & blues music. They also offer theatre, spoken word & film screenings to their patrons. It's a real community hub hosting free story time for babies & children every Saturday, as well as the annual comedy festival. They are also a big part of the local community group helping run & organise street festivals, lunches & a pancake race. They have a full bar food menu with everything prepared & cooked fresh on site leaning heavily towards the vegetarian market. Their signature African sweet potato, spinach & peanut stew is a firm favourite. ? Daniel Lynch / Evening Standard / eyevine
