Suffragist and National Chairman of the Woman's Party, Alice Paul (1885-1977), in Washington, D.C., with a flag symbolizing the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the vote. The Nineteenth Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, when the Tennessee General Assembly, by a one-vote margin, became the thirty-sixth state legislature to ratify the proposed amendment. The flag bears stars for each of 36 states that have granted women the vote.
