Anthony Shadid interviewed people opposed to the regime of President Bashar Assad of Syria, in Syria's Idlib Province, Feb. 12, 2012. Shadid died three days later of an asthma attack while returning to Turkey. Tyler Hicks, a Times photographer who was with Mr. Shadid, carried his body across the border to Turkey.
