These stags try out new hairdos in their attempts to woo a mate. The deer were snapped looking as if they were wearing autumnal wigs by Paul Meek in Richmond Park, London. He said, “They look like they are wearing wigs, all to impress the ladies, or so it is believed. It’s very funny.” “The park covers more than 2,500 acres so sometimes it can be difficult to find the deer, even though there are over 600. Checking all of the usual hang-out spots here means walking large distances. I love the expressions the deer have, usually either a happy smile or a surprised look.” Please byline: Paul Meek Photography/Solent News © Paul Meek Photography/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** Am I right in saying the deer make these 'crowns' during the rutting season, in order to attract mates? This season usually runs between September and November, correct? Yes that is correct. Can we please also have a timeframe for when the following images were taken, they all say 11/10/24 in the metadata: 2D4A8505, 2D4A8472, 2D4A8427, and 2D4A8378. Exact dates in DD/MM/YY format would be great. All the images were taken on Friday 11 October. If you can please describe the images mentioned above in a couple of sentences that would be great. for example, a quick idea of what it is they are doing, why they exhibit this kind of behaviour and a brief summary of what the rutting season is and entails for these stags. I have put the images in order, but they mainly show the different images before, after and in between a number of confrontations with different stags: 1) 2D4A8378 this image shows the dominant male bellowing after fighting another stag in the fog 2) 2D4A8427 this image is him with his harem amongst the ferns after fighting one of the challenger stags - the clashing antlers attracted other stags 3) 2D4A8472 he then chased another stag this shows him with his head dress to show that he is more dominant and supposedly more attractive to the ladies, bellowing loudly to state that this territory belongs to him 4) 2D4A8505 - this was taken after the dominant male (there are a few) chased one of the wannabee Stags, afterwards he shook off his head dress and returned with one of his harem and led them back to the others, these pretenders try to take one of the females away and mate with them whilst the dominant male has his back turned, here he is stating his presence Can we please finally have the locations these were taken, if all in a nature reserve or various locations within a forest etc, an umbrella location such as 'areas of The New Forest' will suffice. These were all taken in Richmond Park, the Royal Park in South West London.
