The women's prison in Tamara, Honduras, on April 15, 2019. Abortion is a criminal offense in Honduras, which means a stillbirth or miscarriage can land you on the wrong side of the law -- something Alma (a pseudonym), 22, is learning right now. She has been charged with ending her pregnancy; she says she didn't even know she was pregnant before she had a stillbirth. Her case has been ongoing for two years, and in the meantime, Alma's life is on hold. In May 2019, while Alma worked bottling and labeling shampoo and awaited her next hearing, Honduras revised its penal code. Feminist activists had been pushing for the government to decrease the penalties for abortion, which apply to any woman who ends her pregnancy, including rape victims or women whose lives are at risk. Instead, the government decreased the penalty for violence against women; now, men convicted of violence against women face between one and four years in prison, commutable by bond or community service. The penalty for abortion remains as high as ten years in prison. Violence against women is endemic in Central America, and in Honduras, it has a particularly high cost: Emergency contraception is outlawed, and so rape survivors can't prevent pregnancy; abortion is criminalized in all cases, and women who end pregnancies can face close to a decade in prison. The patriarchal culture that fuels violence, advocates say, is the same one that upholds some of the most extreme restrictions on reproductive rights in the world. All of this creates a climate in which many women see no option but to flee, risking their lives to travel to the United States.
