Germany, Berlin, 10 March 2016 32 year old Syrian refugee and former mechanic Ahmed (last name withheld) left his home town of Damascus 2 years and 9 months ago and went to Turkey for medical treatment before coming to Germany on the 16th of December 2015. Ahmed says he was hit by a bullet in the head blinding him, he hopes to get medical treatment in Germany. Ahmed stays at DRK-Notunterkunft at 104 Ruschestrasse or German Red Cross Emergency Shelter, housed in the former headquarters of the GDR Ministry for State Security, more commonly known as The Stasi. The building lay empty for ten years before, in November 2015 it was taken over by the German Red Cross and the 13 story building is now a temporary shelter for 1300 refugees, including 700 children. The building is being refurbished to be able to take 2,500 people. The facility and services it provides costs the German tax payer ??Z1.5 million per month. Robin Hammond / NOOR
