CITY by David Levene: DHAKA, BANGALDESH LONGITUDE: 90o 25' 70.23" 23/11/13 Garment factory, Savar district. Dhaka is home to one of the largest garment-producing industries in the world, supplying fashion and textiles mainly to the USA and Europe. In 2013 over 4 million workers were employed in the garment industry in Dhaka, most of them women. In that year in Savar district the Rana Plaza factory collapsed killing 1045 garment workers. It was just one of a string of factory collapses and fires over the years that plagued this poorly regulated industry.Over half of the world's population now lives in cities, but how do we live, what kind of places are we creating, and how are these stories being told? From travelling with the nomadic herdsmen of the Mongolian planes to exploring the floating villages of the Lagos lagoon, award-winning eyevine photographer David Levene has spent the last two decades documenting how people live and work around the world in vivid detail. His new book, City, scans the globe in a 360- degree journey from Tokyo in the east to San Francisco in the west, providing a startling snapshot of the diverse forms of urbanity that exist across all five continents. ?
