More than 60 tourist-filled safari vehicles make a long line along the road where a rhino grazes in the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, on March 5, 2024. Government officials have announced plans to resettle the entire population of more than 100,000 Maasai from the conservation zone around Ngorongoro Crater to “modern houses” in another part of the country. Traditional Maasai compounds known as bomas have been burned. Park rangers have seized cattle by the tens of thousands. The Maasai were displaced from Ngorongoro crater in the 1970s, but they retained grazing rights and were able to get salt for their livestock and continue their ceremonial practices here. This is a sacred place for the local Maasai community, and traditionally young men visited here to receive a blessing before they were circumcised and became morans, and for the celebrations following their initiation. The waters and soil here have special mineral content / salt that is nourishing to the cows. In 2009 the government banned the Maasai from the park entirely. The community lives on the rim of the crater where they have a view of the tourists frolicking in their former home, though increasingly they are being pushed even further back.
