SNOW REST FOR THE WEARY! This red fox takes a well-earned nap after hunting in some harsh snowy conditions. The paw-sitively peaceful fox was spotted on the fringes of a wooded area along a highway in Haines, Alaska, USA.
Ina Schieferdecker said, “On the Alaska Highway, I saw the fox tracks and saw the fox lying asleep. I assumed that it had just eaten and was now resting and sleeping comfortably in the fluffy snow!”
“Seeing the fox from the car made me very happy. He was lying there looking like a big stone in the middle of the snow! Of course, that's not normal and I've never seen anything like it before because at home in Germany they use their dens to sleep and are rarely seen in the open.”

*** Local Caption *** I was on my way back from Haines/Alaska to Whitehorse in Canada on November 11th, 2024 at 3:10 p.m. On the Alaska Highway, just before Haines Junction, I saw the fox tracks and saw the fox lying asleep. It had several holes and there was some blood. So I assumed that it was full and sleeping comfortably and contentedly! Since it was cold and slowly getting dark, I drove on in the car and let it sleep.
It's a red fox and yes, there are a few here, but I haven't seen them yet. Overall, they are well distributed around the world.
Seeing the fox from the car made me very happy. He was lying there looking like a big stone in the middle of the snow! Of course, that's not normal and I've never seen anything like it before because here in Germany they use their dens to sleep. As I said, I think it was exhausting for him and it's very cold here. He looked around often and his eyes kept closing. There was nothing around, so I took my photos every 20 m and drove on. As I was packing up the camera, he was asleep again. I was also very surprised at how relaxed he was about the car and me. As I drove on, I thought about this little fox for a long time.
It is also important to move slowly and calmly! I clicked my tongue once and looked around the whole area. He saw me and still his eyes closed, as he looked so cute with only one eye, I thought it was fair to go. That's why I don't have any more photos or any of him walking!
