On 31 August 1988, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa called for miners, shipyard and transport workers to end their strikes. Walesa who openly challenged the Polish Communist government's economic and social policies was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 and became President of Poland in 1990.
