Democratic Republic of Congo, North Kivu, Goma, May 2010 31 year old Noella at Gesom Hospital, in Goma. Noella is being treated for fistula - the tissue between her bladder and her vagina has been torn. She has had 3 unsuccessful operations. 6 military men gang raped her one night in a field near her village. They held her down, one pointed a gun at her and threatened to shoot if she cried out. Some time during the rape she lost consciousness. When she awoke the next morning there was blood and urine coming from her vagina. They had taken her to their camp in the forest. Other women were there. They had also been kidnapped and made ???wives??? of the soldiers. Noella was locked in a room. Because of her constant bleeding and leaking of urine the men didn???t touch her again. She was afraid though as she knew they had bought her there to be a wife and as she was no good if she couldn???t be used for sex, she was afraid they would kill her. She planned her escape. One woman was given the task to unlock the door each day and feed her. About 3 months after she was first taken to the camp, all the men were away. The woman helped Noella escape. ??sI was in the field and I was surprised to see 6 men with military clothes around me. I was afraid and they took me, one of them took a gun and one of them held me down me and I didn???t cry because of the guy with the gun. they make sexual violence one by one??? An estimated 250,000 women have been victims of sexual violence during the Democratic Republic of Congo's civil war. As the chaos that accompanies war continues so does the rape of women in the area.
