On the second day of her four day Royal visit to Italy, Queen Elizabeth II met Pope John Paul II at the Vatican today. Her Royal Highness, who is head of the Church of England, and the 80-year-old Pope spent over twenty minutes discussing the Northern Ireland Peace Process, third world debt and Christian unity at a private meeting, which took place in the comfort of the Pope's library. In accordance with Vatican protocol, Her Majesty, dressed in black, wearing a wool suit with a matching hat and veil. At the end of their meeting, they shook hands. The Queen offered His Holiness a book of Canaletto's paintings and said it was "a great pleasure" to see the Pontiff again, recalling that the last time was in Buckingham Palace back in 1982. The Pope, who suffers from Parkinsons disease, was frail but mentally alert during Her Majesty's third ever visit to the Vatican, the second during his tenure. The Queen, who arrived in Rome with Prince Philip on Monday, went on to visit the capital's Anglican Centre and later the Sistine Chapel.
