Pope John Paul II (L) meets 13 April 1986 in the Grand Synagogue of Rome with Jewish religious authorities. The pontiff set foot in a Synagogue, going where no pope had gone in 2,000 years of Christianity, to deplore antisemitism and call for closer Judeo-Christian ties. Breaking with cannon law barring the Catholic clergy from entering Jewish houses of worship, the pope told the congregation of the Grand Synagogue that the Jews were "our dearly beloved....and, in a certain way, our older brothers". He definitively absolved the Jews of blame in the death of Christ, saying there was no "theological justification" for discrimination or persecution. AFP PHOTO
