Pope John Paul II, flanked by five young people representing the five continents, arrives 19 August 2000 evening at the sprawling Tor Vergata campus of Rome university to start a prayer vigil leading up to World Youth Day. Security officials and Rome's mayor Francesco said the crowd at the campus on the city's outskirts topped two million people, making it the largest gathering in Rome in living memory. Many of the young people waited all day under a blazing sun to take their place at the ceremony.
