Historie znad Mekongu - Vu Images
Vietnam, Can Tho, July 13, 2009 The Delta, the river's mouth and an aquatic labyrinth, swarms with ceaseless activity. The Mekong's delta- where the river ends its long course and spreads out into a multitude of waterways- is a 19,300 sq. mile (50,000 km2) alluvial plain. The changing seasons reveal its two faces: one is ochre and covered with wrinkles and cracks, and the other is green and undulates like a vegetal sea. Leopold Ballu de la Barricre, one of the first Frenchman who explored this land, evoked that constantly changing world, and said: "Nothing over there grounds the soul. The very foundation of life is lacking. The soil gives in, it's mud, and only thoughts can glide over that endless green." While the territories he described in the middle of the nineteenth century were still relatively unpopulated, today's delta seethes with activity. Lam Duc Hien / Agence VU
