China, Yunnan, 2009 The Melting-pot River. The Mekong runs across China over a distance of roughly 1,250 miles (2,000 km), half of its total length. Yunnan, also called "The Kingdom of non-ferrous metals", constitutes in itself 21.5% of its basin. There are over 25 ethnic groups living on its shores, including the Hmong, embroidery experts, the Dai, rice farmers, or the Bai. In the village of Xin Zang, Chen Kayo, 86 years old, is a Han Chinese who never left his region and still grows some tea with the aid of his children. In the neighboring valley, the village of Cizhong is home to a christian community of 200 families, a product of the nineteenth century's missionaries.
